The key ethos that shaped the client brief and our approach to the design was: the concept of the house as a transitional retreat from hectic modern life into the idyllic surroundings, the use of materials found on site sustainably within our design along with the establishment of a hobby vineyard.

We wanted to explore traditional building practice but in a contemporary manner. The chalk soils, character and setting of the site made it uniquely suitable for the production of Champagne or sparkling wine. The materials found upon site shaped the design concept and construction. The geography; the slope and strata of the land and the landscape aspirations shape the form of the house; the interrelation of spaces and connectivity with the landscape.
